PRE-OP NUTRITION

Fueling Your Body Before Surgery

What you eat in the weeks before an operation shapes how well your body handles it, and how quickly you recover afterward.

Protein is the raw material of repair

Every tissue an operation touches, skin, muscle, blood vessels, has to be rebuilt out of something. That something is largely protein. Amino acids, the building blocks protein breaks down into, are what your body uses to synthesize new collagen, replace blood cells, and manufacture the immune proteins that fight off infection at the incision site.
When protein intake is low heading into surgery, the body has fewer of these building blocks in reserve. That can mean slower wound closure, more muscle lost during the recovery period, and a longer road back to normal strength.

Surgery is a stressor your body prepares for in advance

The metabolic demands of surgery do not start at the first incision. In the days beforehand, the body is already anticipating the stress response, inflammation, and tissue breakdown that come with any operation. Entering that window already running a protein deficit compounds the muscle loss and slow healing that can follow.
This is why many pre-surgical nutrition guidelines now recommend increasing protein intake in the one to two weeks before an elective procedure, not just after, so the body has a reserve to draw on rather than starting from behind.

What that looks like on a plate

In practice, this means spreading protein across every meal rather than loading it all at dinner: lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, and legumes are the foundation. When appetite is low in the days before a procedure, a protein supplement, a shake, powder, or ready-to-drink option, can help close the gap without requiring a large meal.
Staying lightly active in this window, walking, gentle strength work, mobility, also helps the body use that protein to maintain muscle rather than simply store it.
